Software engineering is the engineering of large and complex software systems. It focuses on systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of quality software, and the study of these approaches.
The main objectives of SERL are to promote quality software development at universities and industry by providing well-grounded tools and techniques for software development and to operate closely with the industry by establishing touch points.

- • Building a case study bank from real world projects for teaching Software engineering. The case bank related to Software architecture topics is published as a book ‘Case Studies in Software Architecture’.
- • Sridhar Chimalakonda, IIIT-H’s research student, has been appointed by ISO/IEC JTC1/SC7, the International Standards Organization (ISO) committee responsible to develop ISO standards in the area of Software and Systems Engineering, as Co-Editor for ISO/IEC 26521, an on-going standard proposal for software product lines (May 2009).
- • Dr. Vasudeva Varma’s work on “Building a Semantic Virtual Museum: From Wiki to Semantic Wiki using Named Entity Recognition” got accepted in OOPSLA. “Building a Semantic Virtual Museum: From Wiki to Semantic Wiki using Named Entity Recognition”, with Alain Plantec, Vincent Ribaud got accepted at ACM SIGPLAN International Conference on Object-Oriented Programming, Systems, Languages, and Applications (OOPSLA), October 25 - 29, 2009, Orlando, FL, USA. OOPSLA is tops SE conference in the world.
- • Conducted many workshops in industry on Software architecture related topics in a Case Study mode.
Conferences Organized
- 22nd IEEE-CS Conference on Software Engineering Education and Training (22nd CSEET 2009) held in Hyderabad from February 17 - 19, 2009.
Conference on Software Engineering Education and Training seeks to answer the question:
"As educators, how do we adjust our teaching to meet the personal preferences and technical challenges of the next generation of software engineers?"
Started in 1987 by Norm Gibbs at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), CSEE&T has become the premier annual conference focusing on education and training in software engineering. The Conference offers an opportunity to educators and industry professionals to share and expand their knowledge of software engineering education, training, and professional issues. The conference has received the sustained support and sponsorship of IEEE - Computer Society, academia and industry.
CSEET'09 is in India, hub for software services to the world. CSEET will be conducted at Satyam School of Leadership, Hyderabad, India. This state of the art facility provide ample space and ambience for meaningful discussions and is situated in heart of the software development zone of Hyderabad.
- 1st India Software Engineering Conference
Hyderabad- (ISEC2008), Feb 19-22, 2008.
The ISEC conference is planned as the main yearly conference of the newly created Special Interest Group on Software Engineering, SIGSE under the umbrella of the Computer Society of India, CSI. The First ISEC will be held in Hyderabad, an important IT destination in India. ISEC will bring together researchers and practitioners from across the world to share the results of their work.Technical papers describing original and unpublished results of conceptual, empirical, and experimental software engineering research, as well as those describing Industry Experience will be in the program. ISEC will provide a forum for researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry to meet and share cutting-edge advancements in the field of software engineering.
