ASSESSMENT OF MALBASEY LANDSLIDE (WEST SIKKIM) DURING 2011 INDIA - NEPAL EARTHQUAKEAuthors: Niharika Rao Shiny,Neelima Satyam Conference: 6th International Geotechnical Symposium on Indian Flag Disaster Mitigation in Special Geoenvironmental Conditions Location IIT Madras, Chennai, India. Date: 2015-01-21 Report no: IIIT/TR/2015/2 AbstractSikkim is in hilly terrains and frequently experiences with minor to major seismic events. An earthquake on 18th September 2011 with magnitude 6.9 destroyed the area causing landslide at several places. Majority of damages occurred due to landslides especially roadways and communication networks. The major landslides observed in the western districts of Sikkim comparative to other districts. The slope which is considered for the detailed analysis in this research paper lies between Jorethang to Malabsey village road section near on the western side of the state with 27.13 latitude and 88.21longitudes. The slope before earthquake is taken from Google earth (Google, 2005) and stability of slope is carried out considering dynamic analysis . The non - linear analysis is carried out in Geo Studio (QUAKE/W) software. The analysis considers the geometry, geology, geotechnical parameters and site-specific characteristics of the slope. Factor of safety has been obtained using three different methods is also carried out. Nodal points are selected at seven different places along the slope to know dynamic response; that is stress strain, maximum displacements and shear strain. Factor of safety versus time and acceleration versus displacement curves at all the nodal points considered are estimated and displacements were compared with the slope profile after this earthquake event.
