Numerical Modeling of a Pile foundation in a Liquefiable Sloping GroundAuthors: Neelima Satyam,Rajesh Myneni Conference: 1st International Conference on Information Technology in Geo-Engineering Date: 2010-09-16 Report no: IIIT/TR/2010/180 AbstractPile foundations are slender structural elements used to transfer loads from structures into deep hard strata below the ground level. It should withstand various types of loads including axial and lateral loads. Normally piles are provided to withstand vertical loads situated in horizontal ground with or without lateral loads. The load transfer mechanism for a laterally loaded pile is very complex when it is located on the sloping ground. It is difficult and expensive to carry out field test over the piles in larger lengths. Even though scaling effects influence the results of study, model test can be carried out as an alternative to field test. Computer simulations of Finite Element modeling will allow in depth to analyze pile foundation in sloping ground. In this paper a 2-D Finite Element modeling program is used to evaluate the response of a pile subjected to a lateral load, located on a sloping ground in cohesion less soil.
